HCC's Education Center at MacDill Air Force Base is open to both civilians and military personnel; however, active duty military are always given priority in registering for classes. The Center is open for student support from 9:00am to 5:30pm, Monday thru Thursday. It is closed on Fridays and Federal holidays.
The program at MacDill is based on an accelerated instructional format of five 8-week terms per academic year. Classes are held in the evenings and on weekends in Base-provided classrooms in the Base Education/Library building. There is also an on-line component featuring 10-week courses designed to support forward deployed and temporary duty military personnel. Students may register for MacDill courses at any HCC campus or online via web registration, if eligible. Military personnel, dependents, and others with unrestricted base access may register at the Base Center. Students may take classes at MacDill while enrolled in regular-term classes at other HCC locations. For more information, please call 259-6396 or 259-6391.
Unless you have a Department of Defense identification card, the Air Force requires that you undergo a federal background investigation in order to attend classes on MacDill AFB. In short, ALL community civilian (non-active or retired military) students must undergo a criminal history check before they will be allowed to enter the Base. Non-DOD affiliated foreign students (NO student visas allowed) and individuals on parole/probation are automatically denied access to on-base classes. Students with felony convictions in their history should contact the MacDill Center for consultation. Resident aliens with applicable Immigration and Naturalization Service documentation may attend on-base classes, but will need to present their Resident Alien card before they receive their base pass. EVERY ONE ENTERING THE BASE – INCLUDING DRIVERS – MUST UNDERGO A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION FOR ACCESS.
Unless you have a Department of Defense identification card, the Air Force requires that you undergo a federal background investigation in order to attend classes on MacDill AFB. After you have registered for a MacDill class, contact the numbers above not earlier than 5 business days before the start date of your class. At that time you will be told when and where to go for the Air Force to conduct the required security investigation at no cost to you. It is a one-stop event lasting roughly 30 minutes. If you call within the cited 5 business day window and no one answers your call, listen and comply with the instructions given within the voice message. They will provide detailed directions for what is required.
Also, be aware that because the classrooms used by the MacDill center are not HCC property, classroom locations are never listed on the HCC website. They are posted on the entry way to the Center location.
