Black History Month Writing Contest

The Writing Center, in conjunction with the English department of the Brandon campus, is hosting a writing contest in celebration of Black History Month.  This contest is open to all currently enrolled HCC students, from any campus.  This year's theme is African-American contributors to American culture and history.
 
UPDATE: The writing contest winners will now receive Barnes and Noble gift cards as part of their award!  Each category will have afirst, second, and third place winner, with a prize of $25, $15, and $10, respectively.
 
We are accepting submissions in the following categories:
Poetry
Short Stories
Essays
 
Students may submit no more than one piece for each category.  Each piece must adhere to this year's theme, and must also adhere to the following guidelines:
For all categories: Manuscript must be double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font.  Pages should be numbered.  Include a cover sheet with the student's name, HCC student ID number, e-mail address, phone number, and category of the piece.  The student's informationshould NOT be included on any other page.
For poetry: No more than 750 words
For short stories: No more than 2,500 words
For essays: No more than 1,000 words
 
Judges will be seeking entries that are clear, grammatically correct, and best embody the theme of the contest.  We will award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner in each category, pending number of entries.
 
Students may NOT have their entries reviewed in the Brandon Writing Center.
