americandream

THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL NOVEMBER 19th. PLEASE HAVE YOUR ENTRIES IN NO LATER THAN THAT.

Update: The top winner in each category (poetry, short story, and essay) will receive a $100 Visa gift card! Entries must follow the rules in order to win, so be sure to read below before you enter!

What is the American Dream?  How do you define the American Dream?

What does the American Dream mean to you?

How do you reach the American Dream?

Is the American Dream a myth or a reality?

Michelle Obama says that everyone in this country should have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream, “no matter who we are, or where we’re from, or what we look like, or who we love.”

Share your ideas on the American Dream.

The Brandon Writing Center and English Department are once again joining forces on a writing contest.  This one is a semester long tribute to the American Dream.  Any short story, poem, or essay related to the topic of the American Dream is welcome as an entry to this semester’s contest.  Prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories.

RULES:

  • Entries are restricted to students currently enrolled in at least one class at Hillsborough Community College's Brandon campus or the satellite campus, HCC @ the Regent.
  • Poems may be no more than 750 words, short stories may be no more than 2,500 words, and essays may be no more than 1,000 words.
  • Students may not submit more than one entry.
  • All manuscripts must be double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pt font.  Pages should be numbered.
  • All entries must contain a separate cover page containing the student’s name, title of the piece, HCC ID number, e-mail address, phone number, and category of the piece.  This information must NOT appear on any other page.
  • Manuscripts not related to the theme of “The American Dream” will not be considered for placement or any potential prizes.
  • All entries must be e-mailed as an attachment to sholladay@hccfl.edu.  No hard copy entries will be accepted.
  • Submissions must be e-mailed by the author of the entry.  Submissions sent on behalf of a student writer will not be accepted.
  • Entries must be received no later than 5 PM on November 19th, 2012.
  • Any manuscript intended to be submitted to the contest may not be reviewed by Rachel Lieberman (tutor in the Writing Center), as she will be a judge.  This is essential to keep the contest fair.  During judging, if she identifies a manuscript she worked with previously, it will be disqualified.
  • In order to be eligible for prizes, students must follow all rules listed above.  The judges and sponsoring departments reserve the right to withhold prizes if entries do not meet the qualifications or do not follow the contest's theme.

Please follow these rules as written, since any broken rules may result in your piece being disqualified.  Prizes may be awarded to winners, depending on available funds and number of entries.
