Dietetic Technician Program

The Dietetic Technician Program is a two-year curriculum, which may be pursued on a full or part-time basis. Integration of the theory of the classroom studies with the experience of the laboratory and supervised clinical experience occurs throughout the program.

Included in the program are 450 hours of supervised practice under the direction of registered dietitians, which creates real-world experience for students. Supervised practice settings include hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based programs. Students participate as active learners in a variety of settings planned to develop competency as a dietetic technician.

Mission:
To prepare graduates with the entry-level skills and competencies to compete successfully within the profession of dietetics.

Goals & Outcomes:
The goals of the Hillsborough Community College Dietetic Technician Program are:

  • The program will prepare competent entry-level dietetic technicians.

    • Eighty percent of students will rate faculty and preceptors as average or above on Course Evaluations.
    • Eighty percent of graduates will rate the level of educational preparation as average or above on the Graduate Survey.
    • The program will maintain an 80% completion rate of the number of students enrolled in the program that complete all program requirements within the defined period of six (6) years.

There are a variety of opportunities to choose from when working as a dietetic technician. You are able to work in government sponsored programs, food companies, health clubs, restaurants, schools, nutrition education programs, rehabilitation centers, community agencies, camps, hospitals and long-term care health centers.

The clinical dietetic technician, under the direction of the dietitian, screens patients for nutrition-care needs, marks menus, teaches individuals or groups, monitors effectiveness of nutrition care, and documents findings in the patient's medical record.

Administrative dietetic technicians contribute to the overall success of the food service by developing menus, supervising food-service employees, monitoring quality of food, and providing in-service training for employees.

Please follow this link for current tuition at HCC.

Accreditation:
The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education has granted “Candidacy for Accreditation” to the Dietetic Technician Associate in Science degree program at Hillsborough Community College.

Admission Requirements:
There are no entrance requirements for the program. However, many courses need to be taken in sequence. In addition, most of the DIE prefixed courses are only offered once a year. Therefore, students are encouraged to talk with the program director to schedule completion of the program coursework to prevent any delay in finishing.

Students must earn at least a "C' in all core HUN and DIE courses.

To meet practicum site expectations, you must:

  • Show current health insurance or agree to enroll in the student accident/health insurance coverage program available through HCC's student government.
  • Pass a Florida Department of Law Enforcement criminal background check.
