Welcome ....

Our mission is to ...

HCC’s commitment to service is clearly articulated in its mission:  “Hillsborough Community College . . . empowers students to excel through its superior teaching and *service* in an innovative learning environment.”  Dedication to service is underscored in strategic planning, particularly in the first two goals: advance student success through a focus on the achievement of learning outcomes for all students with the active involvement of all employees; foster partnerships with the local and global communities to position the College as a premier educational institution for ….community initiatives.

Maybe, "Institutional Commitment to Service Statement" instead?

HCC demonstrates its commitment to service learning (SL) through the assignment of a director, a part-time associate, an assessment officer, and two faculty members to the program.  HCC has an SL committee consisting of the aforementioned employees plus an academic dean and a student services dean.  The committee is working on the existing SL program and surveyed the college community to build awareness of and support for SL and community engagement. Results of the survey are being analyzed.

We can help ...

HCC’s commitment to underserved students, with a focus on increasing student retention and fostering academic success, is evident through our many community partnerships and creative SL projects. SL students and faculty provide services to at-risk school children in the greater Tampa area, serving as mentors and tutors helping to enhance student achievement.  Projects address retention and access to higher education.  Included are health and life skills instruction that relates to effective communication, self-esteem, relationship building, cultural sensitivity, anger management and substance abuse.  The need for SL in Hillsborough County is supported by school district statistics alone:  currently, nearly 25% of the students in the county public school system do not graduate.
