| Service Learning |
A structured instructional method that combines formal coursework with thoughtfully organized community service experiences. Service-learning addresses community-identified needs while helping students meet academic, social and civic learning goals. It focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. |
| Community Service |
Services which are identified by an institution of higher education, through formal or informal consultation with local nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations, as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs. |
| Academic Service Learning |
Service that is integrated with academic course content. It may involve direct or indirect service, and may include academic research. |

e.g., serving food to the needy |
| Indirect Service |
e.g., assessing community nutrition needs or managing a food bank |
| Civic Responsibility |
Citizens of a community being personally accountable to and for the community in which they live. |
