DIY Green Workshop - Rain barrelrain barrel

Florida receives an average 52 inches of rainfall a year. Most of that water flows off our roofs onto lawns and driveways, picking up fertilizers, pesticides and other pollutants that eventually find their way to our lakes, rivers and streams, contributing to non-point source pollution. Rain barrels are a convenient and efficient way to collect some of that water. You'll not only help to reduce the storm water runoff from your yard, but you'll have a free source of chemical-free water to use for irrigating your landscape!

Composting 101

Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic materials into a biological soil amendment (sometimes referred to as humus). You can place compost in the garden or around your home's landscaping. It is an environmentally sound and cost effective way to reduce solid waste, creates a useful soil amendment that really makes your garden and landscape grow, reduces the amount of yard waste generated, and it can be reused in your yard or garden. The nutrients in compost are recycled back into the soil and plant life. Join us and learn how you can start doing this simple thing and grow a better yard!
