Ask a Student Ambassador

StudentAmbassadorsOur Student Ambassadors play an important role in welcoming new international students to Hillsborough Community College, and we are grateful to have them as members of our CIE team!

Whether you are a prospective student who is still trying to decide whether HCC is the right fit for you, or a first-year international student adjusting to life and academics in the United States, our International Student Ambassadors Michelle, Ismail, Skylar and Marco are ready to share their experiences with you and answer any questions you may have.  


MichelleBarrientos

Name: Michelle Barrientos
Hometown: La Paz, Bolivia
Major: Liberal Arts
Favorite Course: Public Speaking
International Student Club Position and Experience: I gain a lot by being an International Student Ambassador. The position allows me to learn much more about different cultures and make new friends from all over the world. It also provides me with the opportunity to be part of the experience of international students who are new to the U.S. and share the experience I have gained while being here.
Extra-Curricular Activities: Traveling, photography and community service

Hometown: Rabat, Morocco
Major: Architecture
Favorite Course: Architectural design, computer drawing and 3D modeling
International Student Club Position and Experience: I’m an international student and studied in several countries before coming to Tampa. I served as a member of many students associations. At HCC, I am part of Phi Theta Kappa HCC, an honor society. I also was member of Toastmasters International, an organization that helps members improve their communication and leadership skills. My dream is to one day build and manage a shelter for orphans and elderly in need.
My Favorite Thing About Tampa: I love the weather and people in Tampa.

Extra-Curricular Activities: Soccer, scuba-Diving, photography, snowboarding

Name: Ran "Skylar" Heo

Favorite Course: Introduction to Criminology
International Student Club Position and Experience: I have been a member of the International Club and HCC Honors Institute since January 2014.  From 2012 to 2013, I attended a public high school in the U.S. as a junior exchange student. 
My Favorite Thing About Tampa: The beaches are close, and the weather is warm and nice all year long. I can go to the beach any day I want.

Apply to Be an International Student Ambassador!

Do you want to share your experiences at HCC with new international students? Are you friendly and outgoing? The CIE office provides leadership opportunities for students to contribute to their and their peers’ holistic HCC experience. As an International Student Ambassador you meet international students from around the world and help them in the weeks leading up to their arrival in Tampa and their first days at HCC, during our New International Student Orientations, International Student Club activities, community events, etc.  

There are four paid Ambassador Positions each semester for which students in their 2nd semester or beyond may apply. Applications to be an Ambassador become available in March. If you are interested in becoming an International Student Ambassador and would like to learn more, contact Matt Barrett at mbarrett5@hccfl.edu.
