Program Overview
Taking place over 10 days, you'll divide your time between exploring the lush tropical rain forest and snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef, one of the hemisphere's largest coral reefs.
Learn about sustainable forestry at the Hill Bank Field Station and participate in eco-friendly efforts by planting trees. You will discover Mayan ruins at the Lamanai archeological site and take part in several learning activities including a medicinal walk and a crocodile-spotting tour.
For the remaining days, the trip moves on to South Water Caye. Here you will spend several days learning about Belizan marine life. Activities include a boat tour of the area mangroves and reefs, identifying marine life, and a visit to a bird sanctuary site.
Academic features of the trip include:
- Pre-departure assignments and an online discussion board
- Daily in-field lectures, such as Principles of Forest Management, and Carbon Sequestration Projects
- Exploration of Belize’s environment, examining:
- Plants and wildlife, including crocodile, bird and other animal habitat
- Marine life, including coral reefs, fish and turtles
- Maya and pre-Maya history, architecture and culture
