Streaming Media with Windows Media Encoder 7

Streaming from an Attached Device

This option allows you to create a Streaming Windows Media file captured from a VCR, DVD, CD player or other media players connected to your computer.

*In order to stream from an attached device you must have a video capture card (see www.windowsmedia.com for compatible video capture cards) and a sound card.

Open up Windows Media Encoder 7 and click on "Broadcast, capture, or convert a file using the New Session Wizard" and click OK. In the SESSION SELECTION window, click the "Capture audio or video from attached devices or computer screen" and click NEXT. In the DEVICE OPTIONS you will want to use both the default video and audio device, click NEXT to continue. You will then be asked what "Windows Media file to create". Here you will enter the location and name, along with the extention .wmv for video or .wma for audio (for Windows Media Video or Windows Media Audio), you want to save. If you do not know where you want to save the file, click BROWSE and search for the location you want the file to be save. Be sure to remember to add the name you want it saved as and the extension (.wmv or .wma). Once you have selected the location and file name click NEXT. To stream the file from your computer without access to a streaming server, click on "File will stream from a Web server or play directly on a computer". Click on NEXT to proceed to the next screen. In the PROFILE SELECTION you will be asked at what speed you want to deliver the streaming file. DSL/Cable delivery offers the highest quality of sound and picture, but requires the viewer to have access to a high speed connection. Choosing 56k dilivery, lowers the quality of picture and sound, and also shrinks the image size, but allows almost everyone to view the file since most people have at least a 56k modem. It is suggested that when creating a Window Media File, you create two files, one at high speed and the other at 56k so that the viewer has a choice of viewing the file at either high speed or at 56k. This allows every viewer the possibilty of selecting the better choice according to their internet connection. Once you have selected the speed at which you want to display the file, click NEXT. In the DISPLY INFORMATION page you can enter a TITLE, AUTHOR, COPYRIGHT, RATING and DESCRIPTION for your file. The information you provide will be displayed when the video is being streamed. You may choose, however, not to include any extra information. Click NEXT to proceed. The SETTINGS REVIEW screen just shows you, the settings you have chosen, click FINISH to continue. You will now be able to start the recording process. First start the tape, CD or DVD to be streamed. Then in the lower right hand side of the screen click START to begin the capturing process. You should be able to see what is being captured in the box in the upper portion of the screen. Once you are ready to stop capturing click STOP. You have now captured the file to be streamed, go to the location you have saved the file and upload it to your FTP location. You will now be able to add the link to your webpage to be viewed as a streaming file. If you have any further question contact the eCampus Multimedia Department at 7768 or Carl Schweibinz.
