What are the requirements for starting the EMT Program at HCC?

You must be currently enrolled at HCC or apply to HCC and meet the entrance requirements as outlined in the most current catalog. Unless you have previous college English and math, or have a college degree, you will have to take the College Placement Test. Specific program requirements are outlines below:
Entrance Requirements
1) be at least 18 years of age
2) be free from physical or mental defects or disease which might impair his/her ability to function as an EMT-B
3) be free from addiction to narcotics or any controlled substance.
4) provide proof of immunizations and PPD within one year of starting EMT
5) complete an FDLE Criminal Background Check |

How often is EMT-Basic training offered? |

EMT-Basic training is offered during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters |

Training normally is completed in one semester (16weeks). |

How many credits is HCC EMT training? |
|

EMT training is a total of 11 credits. The number of credits is determined by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. The breakdown of credits is as follows:
HSC 1220 Introduction to Health Sciences (1 credit)
EMS 1119 EMT-Basic Lecture (7 credits)
EMSL 1119 EMT-Basic Lab (2 credits)
EMS 1431 EMT Clinical (1 credit)

How are EMT training classes scheduled? |
|

EMT is offered both in the evening and day-time. Lectures are scheduled Mon & Wed. or Tues & Thurs. Labs are held on the opposite evenings and Clinicals are scheduled around lecture and labs.

What are the hours of the classes? |

Generally, evening lecture classes are from 6:00PM -9:30PM. Evening lab classes are from 5:00PM - 8:00PM
Generally, day-time lecture classes are from 9:00AM - 12:30PM. Day-time lab classes are from 10:00AM - 1:00PM.

What do the EMT Clinicals consist of? |

Students are required to attend three (3) seven hour rotations in an approved hospital emergency room. In addition, students must ride with an approved Basic Life Support ambulance provider and participate in a minimum of five (5) 911 responses that result in patient transport. |

What do I do after my training to become a certified EMT-Basic in the State of Florida? |

| A: |
HCC EMS programs offers its students two options. You can choose to take the National Registry EMT-Basic certification exam OR you can opt to take the Florida certification exam. If you choose the National Registry exam you apply to the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of EMS. for certification. Most students choose to take the National Registry exam and apply to become Florida certified. |

Are there any special requirements for EMT-Basic training? |

All EMS programs students are required to have liability insurance which is included in your lab/clinical fees that are paid at the time of registration. In addition, EMTs must have health insurance and submit to an FDLE Criminal Background Check in order to attend Clinical rotations. EMT students must provide documentation of the following immunizations or medical records: (MMR)
Mumps
proof of immunization or positive titer
Measles (rubeola)
born before 1957 or
documentation of receipt of two (2) doses of live measles vaccine after first birthday and no less than one month apart, or
physician diagnosed measles, or
documentation of immune titer proving immunity
Rubella
rubella vaccine given after one year of age, or
documentation of immune titer proving immunity, or
age greater than 40
DPT / DT /TD / Tetanus
immunization within the last five years
PPD (tuberculin)
skin test good for one year
chest x-ray good for two years
Chicken Pox
current immunization or proof of positive titer |

Are there any special physical requirements for EMT training? |
|
| A: |
EMT-Basic is a very rewarding profession that entails many strenuous activities. Patient moving and lifting is a very important part of the job. Students are required to move and lift a weighted manikin (approx 160 lbs) in various lab settings to simulate real-life situations. The college reasonably accommodates qualified individuals with disabilities and complies with and fully supports the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Do I need CPR certification before I start EMT training? |

| A: |
CPR for healthcare workers, infectious disease and HIV/AIDs and biohazardous waste information is covered as part of HSC 1220, Introduction to Health Sciences. You will have to successfully complete HSC 1220 prior to beginning your Clinical experience. |

What is the cost of EMT training at HCC? |

It is hard to determine the exact cost. Cost are always subject to change. Please refer to a current college catalog for course fees. |

What type of employment opportunities can I expect after I receive my EMT-Basic certification? |
|
| A: |
There are many opportunities for the certified EMT. The Bay Area is home to several Basic Life Support services that employ EMTs in the prehospital care setting. In addition, most Fire Rescue agencies require that firefighter applicants be EMT certified as a condition of employment. Many local hospitals and medical offices hire EMTs to work in their facilities. |

I am an out of state certified EMT-B. How can I become Florida certified?

Currently, Florida does not have reciprocity with other states. If you are currently an EMT-B in another state you must apply to Florida for EMT-B status and take the Florida EMT-B certification exam. For specific questions, please call the State EMS Office at 850-245-4440 |

How much can I expect to be paid as an EMT-Basic? |

Because of the varied opportunities available to EMTs it is best to contact individual employers with questions about wages and salaries.
