Counseling Texts
Your work can make a difference!
Below you will find information on our program.

The Counseling & Human Services Program offers the A.S. and A.A.S. degrees. Full-time students may complete the program in five (5) semesters. The curriculum requires the student to complete sixty-five (65) credits in specified courses.

Part-time students are accepted. The completion time varies for part-time students depending on the number of courses for which they enroll each semester.

The Counseling & Human Services Program provides a strong foundation for securing employment and for pursuing advanced studies. Many of our graduates continue their education to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees, often while employed in the profession.

The program is primarily an evening program in order to accommodate students who are working during the day. The average age range for our students is from the mid-20’s to the early 60’s. Many of our students are returning to school after having been out of the classroom for many years. Our students represent a wide range of ethnic diversity.

The class work in this program includes courses in counseling theory and applied therapeutic techniques, crisis intervention, group counseling, professional development and ethics, multicultural appreciation, sociology, psychology, gerontology and human development.

Supervised internships in community agencies and programs are a major component of the program’s curriculum. Students learn to translate theory into actual practice under the guidance of highly trained and experienced faculty members and community professionals. This “hands on” training helps the graduates of this program to easily find employment in the profession.

The Counseling & Human Services Program is nationally accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education (CSHSE) (www.cshse.org). We were one of the first programs in the country to achieve this accreditation, and we have maintained this certification since 1980. The Counseling & Human Services Program at HCC is the only nationally accredited Human Services program in the state of Florida and is one of only 40 accredited Human Services programs in the country.

The program has transfer agreements with several local colleges and universities.
Most of the credits earned for the A.S. degree in Counseling & Human Services at HCC are transferred towards the bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, human development, behavioral health care or applied behavioral science at the following local schools:

Eckerd College- PEL Program (www.eckerd.edu)
