Dr. Ross was born Warren, Ohio, in 1925. He attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago, IL, graduating in 1949.
Dr. Ross was a practicing Optometrist in Ohio for 21 years as well as a veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the Pacific Arena. Leaving Norwalk, Ohio in the early seventies, he came to Tampa, Florida.
Through contacts in Tallahassee Dr. Ross began to develope a college level education program for Opticians. The program would be the first of it's kind in Florida. That program was developed and began at the Hillsborough Community College Gordon Keller Campus, Davis Island in August, 1973. Dr. Ross was the Director of the program until October 1995.
Through those years, the program expanded and was eventually moved to the Dale Mabry Campus where it still is based. Many changes have come to the career of Ophthalmic Dispensing and the program is continually striving to provide the most complete and effective ophthalmic dispensing education available.
The program is currently managed by William B. Underwood. This program and especially the career of Ophthalmic Dispensing in Florida would not be at the level it has achieved had it not been for Dr. Norman Ross.
