Program Goals and Assessment Plan
1. To enroll qualified students into the Radiation Therapy Program
2. Provide educational and practical experiences necessary to prepare program graduates to obtain employment as entry level Radiation Therapists.
3. Prepare students academically and clinically for eligibility to take the ARRT national examination in Radiation Therapy.
4. Promote a sense of community and profession while developing critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Vision Statement:
The Radiation Therapy Program strives to offer a high quality learning environment that prepares the students to become leaders in the field of radiation therapy.
Mission Statement:
It is the mission of the Radiation Therapy Program to develop and educate competent, professional entry level Radiation Therapists.
The program’s strong commitment to didactic and clinical components provide experiences that aide the student in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective radiation therapist and respond to the needs of today’s changing medical environment. Community affiliations and partnerships provide clinical opportunities for challenging, stimulating learning experiences that direct student success in radiation therapy.
Program Philosophy:
The field of Radiation Therapy is a health science specialty that educates the students in the application of ionizing and gamma radiation administered to patients with neoplastic diseases. In order for the student to fully understand the treatment delivery process, (s)he must have a thorough knowledge of every aspect of the disease including treatment, simulation, histology, physics and tissue reactions with radiation.
Treatments are administered utilizing high energy linear accelerators with multiple energies such as photons and electrons. New advances include multi leaf collimation, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Stereotatic Radiosurgery and the Gamma Knife. Simulation and treatment planning are integral to the overall success of the students. An indepth study of these vital components is presented through didactic classes and labs utilizing hands on treatment planning computers, CT planning systems and simulators.
The program faculty believe that educational excellence is central to the delivery of instruction and encourage students to adapt to challenging situations. Teaching is an interactive process and is most effective when the learner becomes an active participant in the process. Learning is a lifelong process encompassing the acquisition of new ideas, skills and technologic advances. It is a dynamic process from concept formulation, understanding and application of knowledge. The subject curriculum has designed and structured to proceed from simple to complex so that the student will be successful in achieving the program terminal competencies and enter the job market at the entry level position.
