Academic Degrees and Certificates
 

The Construction Industry is one of the largest employers in the Country.  A wide range of career paths are open to persons interested in the design and construction of buildings and building systems. 

Many careers are defined by the type of license or professional registration required by State and local government.  

In the State of Florida these include:

- Registered Architect                

- Professional Engineer               

- Structural Engineer                   

- General Contractor                 

- Certified Inspector

Other career paths involve specialized training in technical fields such as the use of CADD software or industry standard inspection and testing procedures.

HCC offers three levels of academic programs dedicated to design and construction technology;

-  Certification (CCC)

- Associate of Science Degree (AS)

- Associate of Arts Degree (AA)

Completion time varies with the academic program selected.

How to decide on the program that best meets your needs?

Are you interested in designing or in the actual construction process?  Architects and Engineers are designers.  They typically work in an office environment but do make field visits.  Construction managers and inspectors work in the field and convert designs into buildings.  Technicians work with both groups and often can split their time between the formal office environment and construction site.  So ask yourself, are you an indoor or outdoor person and do your interests involve the creation of a design or in the planning and scheduling of a construction project?

Time Factors

·       Certificates require one year of study or less.

·       AS degrees  require two years of study.

·       AA degrees required two years or more of study and two to three years at an upper division College or University.
