What is the Cisco Systems Networking Academy ?

The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a partnership between Cisco Systems, education, business, government, and community organizations around the world. The Networking Academy curriculum centers on teaching students to design, build, and maintain computer networks. The Program prepares students for the 21st Century workplace, while serving as a valuable model for e-learning.
The Cisco Systems Networking Academy program trains students in networking and advanced networking principles with a combination of lectures and hands-on activities & labs. HCC is a local academy within the Cisco Systems Networking Academy structure.


What is the CCNA exam ?

CCNA is "Cisco Certified Network Associate", this is a title you will receive once you pass the Cisco exam at a test center. These four classes will help to prepare a student to take this exam.


How many classes are there ?

HCC will be offering 4 classes that will prepare the student for taking the exam to become a Certified Cisco Network Associate CCNA .

Why should I take any classes if all I have to do is pass the Certification Exam to get Certification ?

If you are currently working in or have experience in the fields of Telecommunication, Networking, and the Internet, it would probably be to your advantage to expedite the attainment of CCNA certification by attempting to pass the exam directly. These 4 courses at HCC are recommended for people needing hands on experience, certification of hands-on skills based exercises and exams, and preparation for successful completion of the certification exam. In addition to offering hands-on experience and exam preparation, these courses provide college credit which can be applied to degree programs offered at HCC.

Do I have to take CET 1600 Cisco Networking Fundamentals if I already took Intro to LANs - CGS 1550 ?

CET 1600 Cisco Networking Fundamentals is the first of four Cisco classes to prepare for the CCNA exam and a future career using Cisco Systems equipment and networking in general. Cisco Systems created the Network Academy Program and says the classes must be taken in order. The content in this class will be different enough from Intro to LANs/Intro to Networking or just about any other networking class you have taken. This first Cisco class covers about 34% of the CCNA Exam objectives.


Are there any prerequesites for the Cisco Certification Courses ?

Yes, CGS 1000 Intro to Computers is a pre-requesite to the first course CET 1600 Cisco Networking Fundamentals. It is also recommended that you have some general knowledge or experience working with web browsers on personal computers (i.e, Internet Explorer and/or Netscape). It would also help to have an understanding of command-line operating systems such as DOS and UNIX CGS 1760. In addition, the more general knowledge of computers and networks that you have, may preclude you from having to put in additional time to understand some of the concepts presented in these classes.

CGS 1000 is a pre-requesite for CET 1600
CET 1600 is a pre-requesite for CET 1610
CET 1610 is a pre-requesite for CET 2615
CET 2615 is a pre-requesite for CET 2620


Do I have to take the prerequisite CGS 1000 Intro to Computers before taking Cisco Networking Academy classes ?

To be a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) you should have a very good background in both computers and networking. The Cisco Networking Academy classes are advanced concept classes and would require a lot of work for computer novices. These classes will give you the background in networking. If you do not have a good background in computers it is suggested that you follow CCC - Networking Services Technology - (Cisco Option) certificate program or the AS/AAS - Networking Services Technology (Cisco Option) Degree. taking the prerequisite and other computer classes listed as needed to get this understanding and background.
If you do have a good background in computers then the CGS 1100 prerequisite can be waived. If you are seeking an A.S. Degree in Networking Services then you will have to take ALL the classes in the degree program at some time.

The Cisco Network Academy classes are only offered at the HCC Dale Mabry Campus which is across from Raymond James Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Florida.

What books will be used for these Cisco Academy classes?

The books that are used for these Cisco Academy classes are available in the Dale Mabry campus book store. The books do change as Cisco updates the CCNA exam or the curreculum used in the course.


What Cisco certification is most suited to an individual who is presently working in network administration?

The level of certification most suited for you depends on your current level of experience and your career goals.

Certifications available along the Network Support path include:

CCNA (Cisco Certified Networking Associate) is the entry-level Cisco certification and provides the basics of router configuration in relatively simple LAN/WAN networks. This is the level that HCC will be offering first.

CCNP (Cisco Certified Networking Professional) CCNPs possess the skills necessary to support more complex networks including LAN, WAN and switching aspects found in larger networks.

CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) certification is the highest Cisco certification level and is only achieved once you possess expert internetworking knowledge and extensive experience configuring a variety of Cisco products.


What is the current demand for Cisco certified professionals?

The demand for networking professionals of all skill levels exceeds the available supply of skilled workers. However, there is a critical shortage of professionals with expert networking skills. By obtaining your Cisco certification, you will have the credentials to land these expert-level jobs and the skills necessary to deploy and manage one of the most popular networking systems in the I.T. industry.
