Dietetic Technician
Program
The Dietetic Technician Program is a two-year CADE-accredited curriculum, which may be pursued on a full or part-time basis. Graduates of CADE-accredited programs are eligible to write the CDR registration examination for dietetic technicians (DTR).
This 64-hour Associate in Science (AS) degree utilizes the integration of classroom theory with the experience of the laboratory and supervised experience throughout the program. Included in the program are 540 hours of supervised practice under the direction of registered dietitians, which creates real-world experience for students. Supervised practice settings include hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based programs. Students participate as active learners in a variety of settings planned to develop competency as a dietetic technician.

To prepare graduates with the entry-level skills and competencies to compete successfully within the profession of dietetics.
Job Outlook:
There are a variety of opportunities to choose from when working as a dietetic technician. Registered dietetic technicians work independently or in teams with registered dietitians in a variety of employment settings You are able to work in government sponsored programs, food companies, health clubs, restaurants, schools, nutrition education programs, rehabilitation centers, community agencies, camps, hospitals and long-term care health centers.
Typical duties of a dietetic technician include supervising employees, menu planning, diet instruction, food purchasing, therapeutic cookery, safety and sanitation, and supervision of food production. Successful dietetic technicians demonstrate the ability to communicate and collaborate, solve problems, and apply critical thinking skills. They enjoy cooking, helping others, and believe that health and well-being are priorities.
The clinical dietetic technician, under the direction of the dietitian, screens patients for nutrition-care needs, marks menus, teaches individuals or groups, monitors effectiveness of nutrition care, and documents findings in the patient's medical record.
Administrative dietetic technicians contribute to the overall success of the food service by developing menus, supervising food-service employees, monitoring quality of food, and providing in-service training for employees.

Accreditation:
The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) has granted “Candidacy for Accreditation” to the Dietetic Technician Associate in Science degree program at Hillsborough Community College. Graduates of CADE-"candidacy for accreditation" programs are eligible to write the CDR registration examination for dietetic technicians.
