The DD-214 is necessary for the application process. For those under Chapter 30, 33, 1606, or 1607, first time applicants will need an Application for Education Benefits, VA Form 22-1990, and transfer students who have received their education benefits in the past or students changing programs must submit a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training, VA form 22-1995. Dependents applying under Chapter 35 need VA Form 22-5490 and when changing need VA Form 22-5495. Dependents may also be required to submit their birth certificate and or marriage license. Those applying under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation, need VA Form 28-1900. Additionally, anyone who paid a "kicker" (extra money towards benefits) may want to provide documentation. Most forms can be submitted online. It usually takes the VA headquarters roughly 6-8 weeks to process your paperwork, but sometimes takes longer.
The GI BILL WEBSITE has most, if not all, information you need to understand your Education Benefits, including the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. The GI Bill site has information on all Education Benefit Programs, How to Apply for Benefits, Payment Rates, Education Forms, and Online Application. The GI Bill site also has links to informatin on other things such as health care, or securing a loan. Another useful website is Florida Service 2 Scholars which is specifically related to Florida colleges and universities.
For Chapter 30, 33, 1606, or 1607, you must confirm your status every month in order to receive your money. To do this, go to the WAVE website (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment) which is located on the GI Bill website. The WAVE site is where you will be going on the last day of every month to confirm your status. After you have logged onto the WAVE website, you will be able to:
See your benefit status
Verify your monthy enrollment
Make any necessary changes to your personal information
Once you have verified your enrollment, it takes 3-5 days (sometimes longer) to process your information. At the end of that time, your money should have been transferred to your checking account.
