EAP Completion Ceremony - Spring 2012
On Wednesday, May 9, 2012, the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program marked a significant first on our Dale Mabry Campus.
For the first time ever our Dale Mabry EAP Program held its own certificate ceremony for those students who were ready to move on to take college level courses. About eighty-five family members, friends, instructors, and students attended this inaugural Completion Awards Ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of forty-six students who had successfully completed the program.
The ceremony had four speakers. Robert Yañez began the evening ceremony with a welcome to all. He had been instrumental in bringing EAP to the Dale Mabry campus over twelve years ago. Two student representatives then spoke about their experiences in the EAP Program. Monica Naranjo represented the day EAP Program while Oscar Milian represented the evening program. Their speeches focused on the power of words and the importance of having advisors, teachers, and family who believed in them and encourage them to do their best.
Following these class representatives, EAP Instructors Lauren Johnson, Susan Brown, and Barbara Smith-Palinkas handed out the Completion Awards Certificates. the ceremony concluded with Ms. Smith-Palinkas offering some closing remarks to students before they move into their chosen fields of study or work.
Afterwards, the students gathered in front of the HCC banner for a group photo. The evening ended with a dessert reception of cake, cookies, coffee and lively conversations among students, family, friends and teachers, recounting good times. The next EAP Certificate Ceremony will be in December to acknowledge the students who completed Level VI In the summer and fall semesters. It is a new tradition that the department looks forward to sharing with its students and the Dale Mabry Campus for years to come. The EAP’s faculty and staff once again congratulate all our students for their hard work, and they wish them the very best as they move into their chosen endeavors.
