Dr. Dexter Brock
Program Manager, Communications Dept.
||Campus: Ybor City
||Office: YLRC 312
Greetings all! This site contains a little information about me, both professionally and personally. Some of my research, volunteer, and career activities that I have been involved in throughout my post military career will be highlighted as well. At Hillsborough Community College, I provide services as this Program Manager of the Communications Department. This department consists of studies in our developmental reading and writing programs, English for Academic Purposes, Speech, Journalism and Mass Communications, and my personal favorite, Freshmen English Composition I and II. I also teach part-time, as needed, at the University of South Florida and St. Petersburg College within their College of Education and English departments respectively.
Since joining the Communications Department at HCC in 1998, my work has focused on literacy and equal educational access in surrounding communities within the metro Tampa areas, as well as accessibility to digital and online learning management systems provided by the college. I, along with a team of professors at the college, have written examinations used by several colleges and universities throughout the state. These examinations were approved by high level administrators and edited by Townsendpress Publishing. Working as a program manager and lecturer, I have researched and/or published articles and book chapters on concepts such as:
learning communities proactive peer review literacy and smartboards
student validation the accommodating classroom the writing process
curriculum updating managing a community discipline with dignity
As implied earlier, I am a veteran of the U.S. Army who has successfully transitioned into a way of life much different than that of a soldier. I serve as the quasi “go to” advocate for veterans who are currently transitioning today as well. At this stage in my life, I am inspired and thrilled by the successes of others, particularly my students, who have achieved one of their goals of becoming college graduates.
In closing, below are a few of the publications and activities that I am particularly proud to have been involved. Feel free to contact me for a more detailed vita of my works if desired. Please click the links for more information regarding the courses that I teach, contact information, etc.
