Professor Jim Wysong
Professor Wysong joined the faculty at HCC in the spring term of 1988 as the first full-time physical science instructor at the Brandon Campus. A native of the Orlando area, his degrees include an A.A. from Valencia Community College in Orlando, a B.A. in Geology and Geography from USF and a M.A. in Physical Geography from USF. Professor Wysong teaches Earth Science lecture/lab, Honors Earth Science lecture/lab, Meteorology, Interdisciplinary Natural Science, and Connections courses. He received the Outstanding HCC Faculty Award (1989 and 2006), the FACC award for Exemplary Educational Practices (2004), and has been nominated for FACC's Outstanding Florida Community College Faculty award (2003). Professor Wysong is also listed in Who's Who in American College Teaching.
Prof.Wysong's professional interests include memberships in the AMS local chapter (past president) and the Florida Society of Geographers (past president)and the Florida Geographic Alliance (board member).
His research activities include aerial photography and mapping work for various environmental grant projects. In addition, Prof. Wysong conducts educational workshops and is active in developing curriculum for local, state and national organizations. Professor Wysong has also participated in the following workshops and expeditions: Archeoastronomy in Central America, Dinosaur excavation in the southwestern US, Aerospace education at NASA's JPL facility, Information technology for science education in India, and Geomorphology in Puerto Rico.
He has conducted field trips for students and for the National Science Foundation's Chautauqua program to the Western US, Washington D.C, The Florida Keys, Central America, Iceland, Greenland, and Mexico.
Prof. Wysong's personal interests include spending time with his wife Donna, and sons William and Austin. He enjoys boating, SCUBA diving and travel. A pilot since age 16, Prof. Wysong also enjoys flying , both for recreation and in support of his research activities.
