Course Objectives

MUT 1112: Music Theory II 

1. The student will understand and be able to define the concept of tonality.
2. The student will create four-part writing of triads in root position with an understanding of
   doubling and spacing.
3. The student will create four-part writing of triads in root position with root movements
   by 2nds, 3rds, and 5ths with attention to correct voice leading principles as outlined in the text.
4. The student will create four-part writing of triads in 1st and 2nd inversion following
   principle of correct voice leading.
5. The student will understand 7th chords, particularly the dominant 7th and the
   resolution of the tri-tone.
6. The student will study basic phrase structure and construct cadences
   using proper voice leading techniques.
7. The student will understand the basics of non-harmonic tones and their usage.
