"The skill to do comes from doing"

Greetings from your instructor, Shelly Stein!

I have taught speech communication and education courses at a number of colleges for the past 30 years--San Jose State University, Evergreen Community College, University of Maryland, College Park, University of Maryland, University College, College of Notre Dame of Baltimore, Catonsville Community College, City Colleges of Chicago, the University of Zimbabwe, Thomas Nelson Community College, and currently at Hillsborough County Community College in Tampa, Florida where I currently reside.

I earned my Master's degree in Organizational Communication from San Jose State University in 1988 and my Ph.D. in Public Communication from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1999.

I have been married for over 25 years.  My husband is retired from the Army and works as a consultant.  We have one son in middle school and a cat named Cato (after the Green Hornet and Pink Panther's sidekick) and a beagle named Buster.

As hobbies, I enjoy swimming, running, cycling, gardening, and reading.   I am a Hillsborough County Extension Master Gardener and enjoy volunteering as a library coordinator and speaker.

Teaching is my passion.  My research interests are in communication education (how to teach speech communication) and instructional communication (how to communicate effectively with students).  Please look through the Course Information on this website.  The courses listed may be a requirement for your area of study, but my students tell me they enjoyed our class and learned valuable knowledge and skills for their career path.  Several years ago, I helped coach one of my students in delivering a workshop on effective instructional communication to a group of religious education teachers at his church.  This is just one example of how you might use what you learn in our class.

I hope to see you in class this semester!
