The HCC Brandon Campus Academic Success Center (ASC) recently welcomed a new student success coach: Tara Forrest. ASC tutors Hannah Smith and Ana Tayeb recently spoke with Tara about her new position and what she can do for students who need an extra boost to succeed.
As a tutor in the Math Lab, Tara was affectionately known to students as the “Math Mom.” Her nurturing approach helped students improve their performances and pursue their goals in math. Now she has expanded her influence, calling herself the “College Mom” and devoting her time to helping new college students succeed in all areas of life.
“I’ve never met a student who can’t succeed, and it makes my world better if everyone succeeds,” Tara said. “I can’t stand when people don’t try. If you’re not going to try for your own life, what else are you going to try for?”
Coach Tara is here to help new and returning students with any issues, from tips on study skills to identifying the text books needed for classes. Asking for help is the smartest thing a student can do, she says. They can save time, energy and headaches by putting forth a little effort on the front end and seeking answers to even the smallest questions.
Tara’s personal motto is summed up in a quote by Dr. Seuss: “You have brain in your head. You have feet your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
She hopes this simple yet effective philosophy is one that students can make their own during their time at HCC and beyond.
