International Club Hosts Maya 2012 Apocalypse
Anthropologist Timothy Smith of Appalachian State University
On March 8th, 2012, Dale Mabry’s International Club hosted a special speaker with an interesting message. Anthropologist Timothy Smith of Appalachian State University came to speak with students, staff, and faculty. His perfectly timed and engaging presentation entitled “The 2012 Maya Apocalypse and Historical Misunderstandings” packed the house with over 100 attendees. Latecomers resorted to standing or sitting on the floor to attend the event.

Dr. Smith is an accomplished and well traveled anthropologist. The author of three books and numerous articles on Guatemala and indigenous communities, he has been awarded a fellowship to serve as a visiting assistant professor and research scholar at Princeton University for the Fall 2012 semester. So is the world ending December 21, 2012? If you want to know the answer, you will have to find one of the lucky students who squeezed into our packed room. The International Club strives to bring a diverse and multicultural experience to the Dale Mabry campus, so stay tuned for more engaging and popular events!
