SouthShore Campus faculty, staff and students reach out to the community
Here on HCC’s SouthShore Campus in Ruskin, we connect with our community throughout the year.
Over the holidays, Professor June Fishbourne led a team of SouthShore elves who collected, organized, wrapped and delivered special gifts for local Head Start children and their families. Their work culminated in a fun party for the recipient families, where SouthShore faculty and staff went to help serve refreshments and distribute the gifts.
The SouthShore SGA also held a wonderful Winter Fest event that has become a tradition for the children at RCMA Academy. HCC students organized and distributed Build-A-Bears to each child in attendance. The looks on the children’s faces when their names were called out to receive their bears were priceless. Afterwards, the children went outside to play in the snow and go sledding, with help from a snow machine and slide. They had the times of their lives, and the HCC students really enjoyed interacting with the RCMA children.
In March the SGA hosted a special egg hunt with kindergarten and first grade students from RCMA Academy. Each child received a basket with goodies donated by Build-a-Bear. One little girl, who was also on campus for the December event, made a special card for the HCC students that said, “I love your school. This is my second visit!”
Exposing community children to a college campus and college students who are enthusiastic and enjoy sharing time with them can make a real difference in their futures. Our hope is that many of these students will graduate from high school and go on to successful college careers at HCC and beyond.
