Tampa, FL – The Ybor City Campus of HCC held its 15th Annual International Festival on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 in the Ybor Room, Plaza, and back patio area at the Ybor City Campus. The International Festival was a day of “multicultural pageantry” when students, faculty, staff, administrators, and friends came together to share and celebrate the international diversity of the Ybor City Campus.
The festival opened at 11:00 AM with the “Parade of Nations” flag ceremony, which was held in the Ybor City Campus Pedestrian Plaza at 15th Street and Palm Avenue. Students, many in their native costumes, carried the flags of their countries and greet the audience in their native languages.
Following the ceremony, visitors to the festival were invited to view student displays of international arts and crafts. Over forty countries from all the major continents will be represented. Visitors also had their names written in different languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic, and view demonstrations of folk art such as origami, lace-making, and the like.
Samples of international cuisine were offered throughout the festival. Several local caterers ensured that there is plenty of great food from all corners of the world.
Both the day and the evening festivities were crowned by performances of international dance and music. Several of the groups that performed contained HCC students or represent HCC programs. Groups featured this year included Kuumba Dancers and Drummers (African), the Tsighan Tribe (Middle Eastern), the Waikiki Dancers (Hawaiian), the HCC Steel Drum Band, the HCC Jazz Band, and the HCC Dance Program. Several other groups will round out the program.
The festival finished around 7:00 PM. As is now a tradition, all festival participants were awarded a special commemorative pin.
