President's Graduation Breakfast

 

Dr. Ken Atwater hosted HCC’s first President’s Graduation Breakfast on Friday morning, May 6 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Approximately 350 students attended this event designed to celebrate their academic accomplishments.

 

Later that afternoon, 792 students walked during the 42nd Annual Commencement Ceremony. This ranks as one of HCC’ s largest graduating classes!

 

Financial Aid Department

 

Ms. Linda Joy Clemons, was recently named the Director of Financial Aid. She joins us from the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale. Ms. Clemons’ initial focus will be the creation of a centralized financial aid processing center at Collaboration Studio, allowing campus staff more time for student interaction and the opportunity to help students take advantage of the electronic resources available to them via the college website and Call Center.

 

Effective July 1, the staff and functions of the financial aid department are centralized college-wide operations. All managers and staff will report directly to the Director of Financial Aid.

 


Mr. Edgar Martinez has been selected as the new Associate Director of Financial Aid. Mr. Martinez has a vast array of Financial Aid experience. As the District Financial Aid Manager for the last year and a half, he coordinated the Federal Direct Loan program, ACG grant, Institutional Scholarships, Over-Awarding Program and other grants and scholarships. Prior to that he was a Financial Aid Counselor at the Plant City campus. Before coming to HCC, Mr. Martinez spent 12 years working in Financial Aid at USF where he also received his Bachelor’s Degree.

Admissions, Registration and Records Department

 

Mr. Ed Olmo who served as the Interim Enrollment and Student Success Officer has been selected to serve in this position permanently. Mr. Olmo was vital to the implementation of Priority Registration, improvements to the transcript evaluation process as well as improvements communicating with students about critical dates. This communication plan has resulted in significant increases in the number of students who pay their fees on time. He was also instrumental in the implementation of the Call Center. As the college will add a College Registrar in the Fall, Mr. Olmo will greatly help the Registrar transition to this new position at HCC.

SSEM Mission and Vision Statement

 

A series of strategic conversations with a cross section of student services staff developed the Student Services & Enrollment Management Mission, Vision, Values, and Learning Outcomes. This is a revision of the previous mission statement that was adopted in 2006. The mission promotes the one-college philosophy, the emerging national focus on learning and assessment as well as the results of the 2008 Student Services Program Review adopted by our Board of Trustees in 2009. Administrative and Legislative Updates

 

Effective July 1, 2011, HCC no longer charges an application fee thereby removing the barrier faced by any student who could not afford the $20 fee. Last year both the graduation fee and the transcript request fee were terminated. Students can now request free transcripts to be sent to other colleges and organizations.

 

Effective July 1, CLAS is over! Students no longer have to meet the CLAS requirements to graduate with their Associates Degree. The college will review historical data and invite students who would have graduated had they met the CLAS requirement to now graduate. This should lead to a significant increase in the overall graduation rate.

Thanks to the Student with Disabilities Support Services Process Management Team (PMT), all records for students with disabilities have been secured via digital imaging.

 

The Testing PMT was extremely successful implementing the new college placement test, PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test).

 

Dr. Linda Herlocker, Dean of Student Services for the Ybor Campus, was elected to the Executive Steering Committee for the Florida Council of Student Affairs.

 

Dr. Ken Ray, Jr., Vice President of Student Services & Enrollment Management, was elected as Secretary to the National Council on Student Development (NCSD).
