HOPE - Helping Black/Brown Men with Opportunities
in Programs that will advance their Education

October Banner HOPE

HOPE is a targeted pilot program designed to improve retention, graduation and the four-year college transfer rate of African American and Hispanic males. Current national and regional data highlight the appallingly low enrollment and completion rate of this population and Hillsborough Community College is committed to altering this trend.

Thirty young men from the Dale Mabry and Ybor campuses were chosen as the initial cohort and twenty-three diverse faculty members were selected as mentors. The participants benefit from individual tutoring, personal faculty mentoring, seminars, college tours, financial stipends, paid attendance at the Black, Brown & College Bound Summit and assistance with four-year college transfer opportunities. For more information on this exciting new program, please contact the Coordinator, Dr. Keith Berry, by email or at 813-253-7041.

Admissions, Registration and Records (ARR) Department

Katherine Durkee has been selected as the new Registrar and will be responsible for all ARR policies and procedures at HCC. Katherine comes to us from Michigan where she was most recently the Registrar at Northwood University in Midland, MI. As the Registrar for the Adult Degree Program (ADP), International programs and the DeVos Graduate School of Management, Ms. Durkee was responsible for the records of all historical, current and future students. She was instrumental in the transition from a quarter-hour (term) system to a semester-hour system. Going paperless (Image Now) was under her auspices and is now used seamlessly by all the centers and staff for ADP.

Ms. Durkee brings a wealth of educational and professional experiences to her new position. She holds a Master's Degree in Business Management and has also taught at the secondary school level. Katherine and her husband, Doyle, have four sons ranging in ages from 22 to 30 years old. She is an avid volunteer in the community, enjoying positions that include coaching, facilitating 3 on 3 tournaments, managing parent organizations for sports clubs, fund raising, and community awareness. She is looking forward to meeting new and interesting people and finding opportunities to serve HCC and the Tampa Bay community. Her office is located at the District Office GWSC 315 - please stop by and welcome her to HCC!
