What is the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program?
The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is a need-based program which provides jobs for student with financial need, allowing them to work to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.
The FWS Program:
• Provides part-time employment while you are enrolled in school for a minimum of 6 credit hours.
• Helps pay your educational expenses.
• Is available to full-time or part-time students.
What kinds of jobs are there?
The FWS Program provides jobs for students demonstrating financial need. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
Are Federal Work-Study jobs on campus or off campus?
Both. If you work on campus, you’ll usually work for your school. If you work off campus, your employer will usually be a private nonprofit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest.
Once awarded by the Financial Aid Office you will meet with the Career Resource Center and discuss the positions that are currently open on campus and schedule an interview. It is encouraged to have a resume at the time of your interview. You and your employer should create a mutually agreeable work schedule that accommodates academic requirements.
How much can I earn?
You’ll earn the current federal minimum wage of $ 7.25 per hour.
Your total FWS award depends on:
• Completion of application to HCC
• Submitting the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ for each academic year.
• You are required to sign up in the financial aid office for the FWS program
• Your level of financial need
• The award depends on the schools available funds
• Since Federal Work-Study is a federal financial aid program, you must meet all the eligibility criteria required for receipt of federal aid.
• Academic progress must have 2.00 GPA
• If at any time, you drop below 6 credits (withdraw, or fall into on suspension status), you must stop working immediately.
How do I apply for a Work Study position?
• You are required to sign up in the financial aid office for the FWS program every semester.
• Once awarded by the Financial Aid Office you will meet with the Career Resource Center and discuss the positions that are currently open on campus and schedule an interview.
How will I be paid?
• By the hour
• Get paid bi-weekly
• Direct deposit to your bank account
Can I work as many hours as I want?
No. The amount you earn can’t exceed your total FWS award. When assigning work hours, your employer will consider your class schedule and your academic progress. The Federal Work Study Program hours during the fall and spring terms will be limited to no more than 20 hours per week. Summer term assignments will be based on departmental need and funding, which may be limited during this period.
Note: Your Federal Work-Study award is intended to help with your living expenses and other, indirect educational costs. No money from your Federal Work-Study award will be available to help you pay for fees at the start of each semester.
