Disability Awareness Day 2012
FUSE at DAD

On Monday, November 5, 2012 the FUSE club (Plant City campus) sponsored an event to bring awareness and provide greater understanding of those with or without disabilities.

The Disability Awareness Day event offered awareness activities and prizes. The activities were designed to bring a broader understanding of various disabilities. One activity was used to demonstrate how a visually-impaired person uses his sense of touch to identify objects. The club used Mystery Boxes, which contained different items inside that had be identified only by touch. When an item was properly identified, the student won a prize.

Another activity used was the "Who Am I?" board, which had pictures of famous people who have disabilities; the object was not so much to identify the disability, but to identify the person. Examples of these people are George Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, and many more. The more people who could be identified, the bigger the prize that could be won.

The club also raffled off ten $5.00 Starbucks gift cards to students who participated in the activities. It was estimated that approximately 50 people took part in the event and the club signed up several new members. Everyone who participated had a fun time and found the event to be both educational and enlightening.
