Guidelines for Disabled Students Receiving Tutorial Services

Purpose of Tutorial Sessions:

Tutors will assist you with your academic studies by reviewing class material, reviewing/editing assignments and homework, assisting in organizing course material, encouraging good study habits and answering questions. Tutorial sessions are not meant to be in lieu of a class or lecture. Tutors are not substitute teachers. You must complete your assigned reading and homework, to the best of your ability, before meeting with your tutor. Tutors do not provide direct answers or do your homework or assignments for you, but rather help you understand the material and discover the correct answer.

Before your Tutorial Sessions:
  • Buy your text book(s).
  • Schedule an appointment with your tutor. You can work with a tutor up to 5 hours a week in each subject (including ‘no shows’ and ‘late cancellations’) and a maximum of 2 hours per tutorial session.
  • Keep up with your class reading and assignments, and attempt your homework, before you meet with your tutor.
During your Tutorial Sessions:
  • Arrive on time.
  • Be prepared: textbook, notes, assignments, pencils, paper, etc.
  • Turn cell phones and beepers off.
  • No friends, family, HCC students and HCC staff are permitted. If you would like to work with another student registered at Disability Services, permission must be obtained from Kelly Oliver before tutorial sessions begin.
  • Time sheets: Every two weeks you must sign your tutor’s green time sheet. Make sure you check the time sheet to verify that the day(s) and time(s) you met with your tutor are correct. Do not sign blank time sheets. Sign the time sheet after the last tutorial session is completed for the pay period.
  • Late Cancellations/No Shows: If you cannot keep your tutorial session, you must contact your tutor and cancel your tutorial session with 24 hours notice. If you have a total of 3 unexcused late cancellations and/or no shows, tutorial services will be suspended or terminated for the remainder of the semester. A late cancellation consists of canceling your tutorial session with less than 24 hours notice. A no show means not showing up for your tutorial session.
  • Tardiness: If you are running late for a tutorial session, your tutor will wait for you 30 minutes. If you do not show up within 30 minutes, your tutor will leave and consider the session a “no show”.
General Information:
  • If you no longer require tutorial services, it is your responsibility to notify both your tutor and our department.
  • If your contact information changes, especially your telephone number, please notify both your tutor and our department.
  • If you have problems or questions concerning financial aid, course selection, grades, instructors, tutors, memos, accommodations, etc., contact our department. Do not discuss these issues with your tutor.
  • All tutorial sessions have to be held at HCC or locations approved by our department. Tutoring at the home of the student or the tutor is not permitted.

Tutorial services are free of charge.
