Winter Break Classes (2011) – Frequently Asked Questions – (FAQ)

How many classes can I take during Winter Break?

Students can take one or two classes: one in the morning from 9 – 12:30 and one in the afternoon from 1:00 – 4:30.

How do I register for Winter Break classes?

HCC Honors students, athletes, and military veterans register November 1st. Current students register November 2nd.  New and former students register November 13.  Transient/Cross-enrolled students must bring a form from their advisor and may register at any HCC campus beginning December 3rd.

Do I have to register at the Ybor City Campus?

No, students may register online or at any campus.

Where do I purchase my books for Winter Break Classes?

Books for Winter Break classes must be purchased at the Ybor City Bookstore. There isn’t enough time for online orders, so please try to purchase books as soon as possible before classes start. The book store will close on December 18th.

Are online classes offered during Winter Break?

Yes, there is one: MAN 1021-36163 - Introduction to Management.

What does it mean that Winter Break classes are considered part of my spring load?

Winter Break classes are listed as part of the spring schedule; therefore, they are considered spring classes, and grades will be on a student’s transcript under that spring semester.

If Winter Break classes are considered spring classes, am I permitted to take two classes during the Winter Break and four more during the regular spring term?

Yes – students who want to take more than 18 credits are considered “overload.” If they want to take an overload, they need to talk to a Counselor, and     typically, if some of those credits fall during Winter Break, it’s a“rubberstamp” on the form and AR&R puts in the registration.

Will my financial aid pay for Winter Break classes?

Yes, if you have been awarded financial aid for spring, it will cover your Winter Break classes.

How many absences can I have during Winter Break classes?

Students are discouraged from being absent during Winter Break classes. Most instructors will allow only one excused absence if absolutely necessary. Missing even one class is like missing nearly two weeks in a regular semester.

When do I have to pay for my Winter Break and spring classes?

Winter Break and spring classes must be paid for at the same time. The payment deadline is December 13th.

Is there an ADD/Drop period for Winter Break Classes?

Yes, there is one day of drop/add on the first day classes start. (December 13th). This is the only day you can receive a refund for dropping a class.

Where do I park?

Students will be given a temporary parking pass on the first day of classes by their instructor. Please park in the parking garage on the corner of 9th Avenue and 13th Streets. Campus security will be notified to not ticket anyone on the first day.

What college office will be open during the Winter Break?

All college offices will officially close on December 18th.

Will there be an open computer lab for student use?

A computer lab in YBOR 303 will be open to students during Winter Session.  The lab will be open from 9am – 3pm each day of Winter Session.  Policies and procedures will be posted in the lab.

Will students have access to the Ybor City Campus Library?

Yes, although the library building will be closed. Students will be given library cards that will enable them to access the HCC library databases from a computer. Students may also use the USF library to do research or to borrow up to 3 books with their HCC ID.  The Tampa Public Libraries are also another option for students.

Will there be food service on campus during the Winter Break?

The Ybor City Campus Cantina will close on December 18th. There is a break room with vending machines on the first floor of the Public Service Technology Building where all classes will be held.

Are students excused from classes for religious observances during Winter Break?

Students may miss one class due to religious observance. There are no classes scheduled for December 24th and 25th.

Will services be available for students with disabilities?

If students require any special accommodations, please make sure you contact the Office for Students with Disabilities no later than December 15th to make arrangements. Please contact Jeanette Starks, Coordinator for Students with Disabilities, 253-7757.

If I have a concern or a complaint about something, whom shall I see?

Please see David Liller, the Acting Dean for Winter Break, In YBOR 126.  His phone number is 259-6472, or email him at dliller@hccfl.edu

Are there any tutoring services available during Winter Break?

No, but students have access with their student ID to SmarThinking at https://smarthinking.hccfl.edu/index.php, a 24/7 online tutoring service.

When will Winter Session grades be posted on my transcripts?

As soon as your instructor enters your grades in Hawknet, they are automatically reflected on your transcript and visible to students in Hawknet.
