Salivary glands
|
Salivary_glands empty their secretions into the oral cavity. There are several types of salivary glands, including the parotid, which are anterior to the ear; submandibular, which are located on the floor of the mouth, ducting under the tongue; and the sublingual, which are in the anterior floor of the mouth, ducting under the tongue.
Salivary glands vary in their histological arrangement. The best slide we have for observation of these glands is the submandibular slide. The mucus-producing cells appear clear, and are capped with serous_demilunes (a/k/a serous cells), which produce a watery, enzyme-rich fluid.
