The penis is the copulatory_organ of the male. It provides penetration of the vaginal_canal of the female, so that sperm can be deposited near the opening of the uterus. It also contains the urethra, which is the terminal portion of the urinary_system.

There are three cylindrical tissue masses in the body of the penis. Two are the corpora_cavernosa (sing: corpus), and one is the corpus_spongiosum, which contains the urethra. Sexual stimulation of any sort will cause the arteries that feed into the corpora to dilate. Large quantities of blood will flood the tissue spaces of the corpora, and the penis will thereby become erect.
