Working with Individuals with Hearing Impairments

If hearing-impaired individual lip-reads:

Look directly at the person when you are conversing.

Speak clearly.

Speak naturally, although slowing down a bit may be helpful.

Do not shout.
If hearing-impaired individual has an interpreter:
Speak to the person, not the interpreter.
Speak naturally, there is no need to wait for the interpreter to finish signing when you are speaking.

Tips for Teachers

Use facial expressions, gestures, and other body language to help convey your message.
Get the student's attention before speaking and always face the student.

Use visual aids during instruction.

Use written communication to announce due dates, assignments, test dates, changes in class schedule.

Repeat questions that are asked by other students in the class so that hearing impaired student knows what you are referring to.
