Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)


Hillsborough Community College’s faculty, staff, and students identified improving student learning outcomes in initial college-level foundation courses (Gateway courses) as its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a part of the College’s accreditation requirement. Faculty identified foundation college-level knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) necessary for academic success in the College’s programs and then mapped those into the College curriculum to identify the actual Gateway courses where such knowledge, skills, and abilities are initially taught.

Strengthening college-level gateway or foundation knowledge, skills, and abilities by focusing on strategies to improve student learning outcomes of the Gateway courses is the impetus of the QEP.  Utilizing Gateway courses allowed the QEP to impact a large number of students while still remaining focused on a relatively small number of courses.  The specific goals for the Gateway Initiative are (1) to improve Student Learning Outcomes in Gateway courses by achieving demonstrable student learning gains in identified gateway college-level knowledge, skills, and abilities, (2) to increase the student success rate in subsequent program courses through demonstrable student learning gains in identified gateway college-level knowledge, skills, and abilities utilized in these courses.
