2019 Summit Speakers

Every year, the BBCB Summit attracts some of the most influential national speakers and scholars to address the barriers that affect persistence and completion among minority males.  Please view our BBCB Brochure for more information on past speakers. 2019 Keynote Speaker: James Brown

James Brown

Mr. James Brown Three-time Emmy Award-winner, Mr. Brown serves as host for the CBS Television Network’s NFL pre-game show, The NFL Today and also hosts The James Brown Show, America’s premier, nationally-syndicated sports and entertainment half-hour series, His first book, Role of a Lifetime: Reflections on Faith, Family and Significant Living, was published in September 2009, teaching readers how to discover life’s purpose for themselves. Brown graduated from Harvard University with a degree in American Government. A standout on the basketball court, In 1996, Brown was inducted into the Harvard Hall of Fame. He is a co-founder and principal of the Brown Technology Group, a certified minority owned and operated information technology company, and is a founding partner of the Washington Nationals. He has partnered with the Verizon Foundation to lead a national dialogue to address their work in domestic violence prevention.  Full bio...

John Quinones

Mr. John Quiñones Combining a moving life story, an exceptional career, incomparable insights, and a powerful presence, John Quiñones has emerged as one of the most inspiring keynotes in the speaking world today. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, a New York Times contributing opinion writer, and a contributing editor of The New Republic, and of ESPN's The Undefeated website.His rise from humble roots in Detroit to his present perch as a world class intellectual, noted author of 19 books, prominent leader and national media fixture testify to his extraordinary talent.

Dyson's legendary ascent – from welfare father to Princeton Ph.D., from church pastor to college professor, from a factory worker who didn’t start college until he was 21 -- may help explain why writer Naomi Wolf terms him “the ideal public intellectual of our time."  Full bio...

Dr. Mark Anthony Neal

Dr. Mark Anthony Neal is a Professor of Black Popular Culture in the Department of African and African-American Studies at Duke University, where he won the 2010 Robert B. Cox Award for Teaching. 

Neal has written and lectured extensively on black popular culture, black masculinity, sexism and homophobia in Black communities, and the history of popular music.  Neal is the founder and managing editor of the blog NewBlackMan (http://newblackman.blogspot.com/). Luis Ponjuan

Dr. Luis Ponjuan is an Associate Professor in Higher Education Administration in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development at Texas A&M University. His research focuses on academic success and college degree completion of male students of color, first-generation students’ access into higher education, and the recruitment and retention of faculty members of color.  Dr. Ponjuan's energetic and inspiring speaker style has resulted in him becoming one of the BBCB Summit's most often requested speakers whose past participation ranked among the highest in speaker evaluations and we are thrilled to have him return again this year!  Full bio... 


Dr. Michael Benitez

Dr. Michael Benitez is a highly sought out speaker and workshop leader at colleges and conferences nationwide, Michael Benitez, Ph.D., is a nationally-acclaimed activist-scholar, practitioner, and educator with extensive experience with diversity issues in higher education. He is known for his down-to-earth, insightful commentary and critical perspectives on social and cultural issues. 

Dr. Benitez is co-editor of the anthology, Crash Course: Reflections on the Film “Crash” for Critical Dialogues About Race, Power and Privilege (2007), and occasionally contributes to online magazines, scholarly databases, books, and journals.Part of his success lies in his ability to speak heart-to-heart while bridging theory and scholarly inquiry with everyday life and peoples’ lived realities.   Full bio... 

Dr. Juan Gilbert

Dr. Juan E. Gilbert is The Banks Preeminence Endowed Professor and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department at the University of Florida where he leads the Human Experience Research Lab. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Dr. Gilbert is the inventor of Prime III, an open source, secure and accessible voting technology that has been used in numerous organization elections and recently in statewide elections in New Hampshire  Full bio...

Dr. Frank Harris

Dr. Frank Harris III is an Associate professor of postsecondary education and co-director of the Minority Male Community College Collaborative (M2C3) at San Diego State University. Harris partners with community colleges across the United States to conduct research and design interventions to facilitate student achievement among men who have been historically underrepresented and underserved in postsecondary education.  

Dr. Harris has authored or co-authored more than 40 scholarly publications. His peer-reviewed works have been published in leading journals for higher education and student affairs research and practice.  Full bio...
