What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and different bioprocesses in the field of medicine, bioengineering and other fields which are associated with manufacturing byproducts. Modern biotechnology includes genetic engineering as well as cell- and tissue culture technologies. The concepts if Biotechnology encompasses a wide range of procedures and techniques for modifying living organisms and cells to breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization.

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that requires knowledge of pure biological sciences  such as genetics, microbiology, animal cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, cell biology as well as dependent on knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology like chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, information technology. Biotechnology is intimately entwined and dependent on the methods developed through concepts of cell biology and has a strong application in the life sciences industry.

What is the aim of Biotechnology program at HCC?

Biotechnology is a conglomeration of techniques and technologies that use biological agents in a broad spectrum of applications to research and industry.  Biotechnology has revolutionized many disciplines including medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.  The Associate of Science in Biotechnology Program at HCC aims to  provides students of diverse backgrounds with the knowledge and skills needed to perform competently in a life sciences laboratory environment.  The Biotechnology industry is a large and growing contributor to regional and national economic output of the Tampa bay region.  Biotechnology is an important emerging interdisciplinary STEM (Science Technology Engineering mathematics) discipline that is expected to contribute dramatically to the economy and is thus an excellent career choice for students.

Program aims to foster a sense of excitement for scientific discovery, teamwork, critical thinking, effective communication, and a positive attitude in students.  In addition, partnerships with local industries provide students with the most current and cutting edge knowledge and techniques in the field.  The program is designed to provide hands-on experience in the educational laboratories  as well as internship experience in industry and research laboratory.

Students gain skills in the following areas:

  • Lab safety
  • DNA manipulation and analysis
  • Expression and purification of proteins
  • Cell culture techniques
  • Enzyme and antibody assays
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
