Dr. William B. Underwood - Opticianry Program Manager
Dr. Underwood received his A.S. degree in Opticianry from Erie Community College and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of South Florida.
Dr. Underwood is an American Board of Opticianry certified Master Optician and a National Contact Lens Examiners certified Master Contact Lens Technician. He is a licensed optician in Florida and New York. Bill was the 1998 recipient of the Opticianry Education Achievement Award from the National Academy of Opticianry as well as a past President of the National Federation of Opticianry Schools.
He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Opticianry and the National Academy of Opticianry. Bill is a frequent lecturer at national and state meetings.
Ms. Laurie Pierce - Faculty
Ms. Pierce joined the Hillsborough Community College Opticianry faculty in 1996. She received her A.S. in Opticianry from Newbury College in Boston. Prior to moving to Florida, she was Program Director of the Opticianry program at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke Massachusetts. She is an American Board of Opticianry certified Master Optician and licensed in Massachusetts and Florida. Ms. Pierce was the 2003 recipient of the Opticianry Education Achievement Award from the National Academy of Opticianry as well as a past President of the Massachusetts Association of Registered Dispensing Opticians.
Laurie teaches Dispensing and Lens Theory, Dispensing Labs and Refractometry courses. She is a frequent lecturer at national and state meetings.
Ms. Mary Seguiti - Faculty
Ms. Seguiti is a graduate of the HCC Opticianry Program 1985 and a Licensed Florida Optician. She received her B.A. degree in Business Management from Eckerd College. Mary serves on the Executive Board of the National Federation of Opticianry Schools and is a consultant to the optical industry.
Mr. Lee Stokes – Clinical Coordinator (HCC/ Tampa)
Mr. Lee Stokes is a graduate of the HCC Opticianry Program Class of 2000 and a licensed Florida Optician. Mr. Stokes is the Clinical Coordinator for the Opticianry Clinic on the Dale Mabry Campus. In addition to his role as Clinic Supervisor, Lee teaches the Ophthalmic Laboratory Courses.
Mr. Thomas Neff - Site Coordinator (HCC / FSW / Online)
Mr. Neff is a graduate of the HCC Opticianry Program Class of 2009 and a Licensed Florida Optician. He received his Bachelors in Technical Education and Industry Training from the University of Central Florida. Also he is currently in the Master’s Degree Program for Applied Learning and Instruction at the University of Central Florida. He is presently the Site Coordinator for the HCC Opticianry Program at Florida Southwestern State College’s Opticianry lab site. He has served in many roles for the Central Florida POF Chapter as well as on the Board of Directors for POF in the past.
He assists in teaching the various lab courses at Florida Southwestern State and the Vision Care Clinical courses.
Pernell Mickens - Adjunct Faculty
Pernell Mickens is an Ophthalmic Technician at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa, FL. He has extensive experience in the Opt Tech Field and teaches the Ophthalmic Skills Course.
Jim Pinckney - Adjunct Faculty
James Pinckney is a licensed Florida Optician and Clinical Site Coordinator for the HCC Opticianry Program Distance Learning Students. He received his A.S. degree in Opticianry from Erie Community College in Buffalo NY.
Mr. Pinckney conducts workshops and clinical site inspections as well as evaluating Distance Learning Student's skill and ability. Mr. Pinckney has owned optical businesses in NY State as well as the Apopka, FL area.
Wayne Wesa - Adjunct Faculty
Wayne Wesa is a graduate of the HCC Opticianry Program and a Licensed Florida Optician. He has extensive Ophthalmic Laboratory experience and assists in teaching those courses.
Atala Valdez - Adjunct Faculty
Atala Valdez is a graduate of the HCC Opticianry Program and a Licensed Florida Optician. She assists in teaching the Dispensing Laboratory and Contact Lens courses
