Assessment and International Student Orientation

Placement Test

Students attending HCC for the first time must attend orientation and, if applicable, take a college placement test.  Upon arrival at HCC, international student advisors will guide students through the placement test process prior to class registration.  The College will provide reasonable accommodations to disabled students taking the placement test.

Students are exempt from taking the placement test if they can provide one of the following:

  1. Appropriate SAT or ACT test scores -- must submit official scores from tests taken within the last 2 years; see chart below for score requirements
  2. Transfer college-level math and general education coursework from a college or university (college transcripts/evaluations must be submitted at the time of admission)

How do I know that I am ready for college-level courses?

The following test scores* are required for college-level courses:

Preparatory Coursework Requirements

If a student’s placement test results do not meet the minimum scores listed above, they will be required to enroll in English and/or math preparatory (prep) courses.  Students will be very limited in the types of classes they can take while enrolled in prep courses.  Depending on the student’s results, they may not take any classes that require college-level reading, writing or math.

NOTE: TOEFL, IELTS and other English proficiency exams that are required for admission cannot be used for college-level placement.

*The minimum required scores on the PERT, SAT or ACT are subject to change.

New International Student Orientation

New international students must report to the Center for International Education (CIE) and attend the New International Student OrientationInitial F-1 visa students may report to the College up to 30 days prior to this date (printed on their HCC I-20). All new students are encouraged to report to the CIE up to 2 to 3 weeks prior to the report date to take the required academic assessment tests, attend new student orientation and register for classes.
