Students attending HCC for the first time must attend orientation and, if applicable, take a college placement test. Upon arrival at HCC, international student advisors will guide all new and transfer international (F-1 visa) students through the placement test process prior to registering students for courses. The College will provide reasonable accommodations to disabled students taking the placement test.
Degree-seeking students must provide assessment/placement test scores from PERT, LOEP, ACT, or SAT prior to registering for classes. Request your SAT or ACT official score reports to be mailed directly to the CIE from the College Board or the ACT respectively. Test scores may be no more than two years old. If the scores are older than two years, or if the student has not previously taken one of the aforementioned placement tests, the student may take the test at the appropriate HCC campus testing office. Students can take the PERT and LOEP exam at HCC.
How do I know that I am ready for college-level courses?
The following test scores are required for college-level courses:
NOTE: Placement test results may indicate a need for college preparatory courses in English language or mathematics before students are permitted to enroll in regular, college-level courses leading to the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree. If the student does not have test scores required for college-level courses, the student will be placed into the appropriate preparatory level coursework. Students testing into college preparatory course work are subject to certain regulations regarding registration.
The minimum required scores on the PERT (Postsecondary Educational Readiness Test) are subject to change.
Students who have earned a postsecondary degree or completed college-level English (such as English Composition I) and mathematics courses might be exempt from the testing requirement. The College strongly recommends that students who have completed postsecondary work at other institutions bring unofficial transcripts or grade slips with them for advising and registration purposes.
New international students must report to the Center for International Education (CIE) and attend the New International Student Orientation. Initial F-1 visa students may report to the College up to 30 days prior to this date (printed on their HCC I-20). All new students are encouraged to report to the CIE up to 2 to 3 weeks prior to the report date to take the required academic assessment tests, attend new student orientation and register for classes.
During the orientation, new students will meet CIE advisors and learn about F-1 immigration regulations, programs at HCC, and how to register for HCC classes. After the orientation, students can begin the registration process if they have submitted all other admission requirements and have taken a placement test.
