English for Academic Purposes - EAP

Hillsborough Community College offers an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program on three campuses:  Dale Mabry, SouthShore and Ybor City.  The EAP Program is designed for students who plan to study at a U.S. college or university.  The EAP, Program offers six levels of instruction to help non-native English speakers reach a level of proficiency that will prepare them for better employment or for academic opportunities.

Each year, over 900 students study in the EAP program.  Students come from all over the world:  South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia. The rich ethnic and cultural diversity of our students is celebrated each spring semester with an International Student Festival during which students showcase the history, customs and traditions of their countries via displays, activities and performances.

EAP Faculty

All instructors have Master's degrees and experience teaching English as a Second Language.  Many instructors have traveled, lived, and/or taught overseas.

EAP Classroom Instruction

Instructors take a communicative approach to teaching English, using authentic materials and focusing in "real" communication in the classroom.

  • Instructional methods may vary from one instructor to another, but students will work individually, in pairs, in small groups and as a whole class.
  • Attendance is mandatory, and textbooks are required for each class.
  • During the semester, students will have both in-class and out-of-class assignments (homework.)  Students will also take tests, quizzes and a final exam.  Many instructors require students to give oral presentations during the semester as well.
