"In a library...anyone with the ability to learn could educate himself or herself and be successful."
~ Andrew Carnegie
Brief Biography
Looking back, I begin to appreciate even more the wonderful education I had at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. Bates College is a small, top, liberal arts college with a reputation for demanding lots of work from its students. My major was history, and I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of the Junior Year Abroad experience. I studied at Oxford (England) University. This was a life-changing event for me as I was exposed to another culture, another style of educating students and lots of travel all over Europe.

After graduating from Bates College, I attended Simmons College Graduate School of Library Science. My grandmother, Marion Burnes, was the first woman in my family to graduate from college. Simmons was her Alma Mater. While attending Simmons, I worked full-time at the Portland Public Library. During the fourteen years at Portland Public Library, I did about everything that you could do in public libraries. This included working at the circulation desk, taking books to Island residents using the ferry and a van, and serving as branch manager.

In 1988, my husband, daughter and I followed family members to Florida. I worked in public libraries in Clearwater, Dunedin and Tampa in positions ranging from branch manager to library director. In 2001, I accepted the position of HCC Brandon librarian and program manager.

Working as an academic librarian gives me a chance to incorporate public library ideas of excellent customer service and the love of reading into an academic setting. I enjoy working with students and faculty at Hillsborough Community College.
