HCC's Partnership with Starting Right Now, Inc.

This year, HCC will be adding a volunteer day of service for HCC faculty and staff. We will be partnering with the Starting Right, Now, Inc. (SRN), which is a non-profit group that works with homeless youth by providing housing, food, academic support and life skills classes, with facilities in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Each student is paired with a mentor to serve as their advocate and to provide both emotional support and guidance. SRN works with each student to move them towards military, vocational or higher education. SRN currently works closely with students who attend HCC.

The HCC community project service date is scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2019, from 8:00 AM-1:00 PM at their Hillsborough County location located at, 207 West Beach Street, Tampa, Florida 33606 (just off the Davis Island Bridge). Our day of service will be to complete interior painting, re-staining 24 beds, landscaping and creating a vegetable garden.  View the Event Photo Album here.

HCC administrators enjoyed a networking luncheon on November, 13, 2018.  Click here to view the photo album.

For the current grant year, HCC will be developing and promoting both existing and new programs with community organizations. In conjunction, over the next six months, HCC will participate in over 40 separate events and activities with community organizations to broaden their activities and events, in support of volunteerism and citizen action. The goal is to promote an MLK Day of Service, “A Day On, Not a Day Off,” through activities involving civic engagement and community support. HCC will support and assist the community organizations with developing and/or expanding their community service projects to make an impact on our community and honor Dr. King’s legacy. Included will be our student service learning project, which coordinates HCC student clubs to collaborate with local community organizations on programs and activities in support of Dr. King’s principles. HCC is the only consortium partner that has included a student service learning project as part of its involvement with this grant.
