Welcome to the Honors Institute

Welcome to the Honors Institute website. We are pleased that you have decided to visit our site because you must be interested in Honors at HCC! As you can read, we have an outstanding program because all of our activities center around helping our students to sing their own songs of success. We look forward to hearing from you.

They Designed, Built and Displayed a Parklet

These past weeks, Honors and American Institute of Architecture Students came together to design, build and display a “Parklet” – a small park using recycled materials built on the city street  (http://tampaarts.com/call-create-parklet-tampa-bay-design-week/).  This all came together this past weekend and was recognized with the “People’s Choice Award” at the Tampa Bay Design Parklet Pop up in the Channel District. Attached you will see the original design and photos of the completed project and some of the students who made it a reality.  Two designs were submitted and both were awarded funds to build ($500 for each design). This Parklet was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Chris Tidwell and includes an outdoor lending library.

We are very proud of the work that was done, the promotion of our school and our programs, and the recognition of a very deserving former Professor.

Thank you to all of you who made this possible!

                                                      Honors Leadership Service Learning

                                                                        WALL of HONOR

For their service learning project in Dr. Beth Smith’s Leadership class, Honors students Brooke Butera, Alissia Griffin, Maya Levi and Abbigail Kossow worked with a memory care unit in Riverview. They planned several activities that paired movies from prior decades ("Oklahoma" was a crowd favorite) and they coordinated meals to go with the themes of the movies. In addition they designed and constructed an Honor Wall to reflect the residents of the unit.  They sat with them and collected information about what they had done, where they had traveled, etc. and posted pictures (past, if available) and present.  Brooke Butera's grandfather was a resident at the facility. Sadly, he passed away shortly after the video was made. The students hope you enjoy this video.
