Guitar Season Ends on a High Note
Friday, February 24th, The Dale Mabry SGA Guitar Series season ended with a record breaking concert attendance….the largest ever in its eleven year history! The audience was treated to an exciting authentic flamenco fiesta-style concert performed by Somos: Flamenco Bohemios. This four piece group, consisting of Eddy Lugo (guitar, voice, palmas), Peter Suarez (dance, percussion, bolas), Chris Walker (guitar, voice, palmas), and Melinda Lugo (voice, dance, palmas), were joined that evening by percussionists Patrick Hernly (tabla) and Roberto Maldonado (congas). They displayed traditional and modern interpretations of dance, song, and guitar, including Alegrias, Milonga, Tangos, Sevillanas, Bulerias, and Farruca. One concert favorite had to be the original rumba composition, Rumbita Vino, composed by Eddy Lugo. The melody was infectious, rhythmically complex, and difficult to play. Eddy’s execution of this piece was flawless. Chris, who played brilliant solos throughout the concert, provided a solid rhythmic foundation, while Patrick’s tabla solo elicited roaring applause during the piece.

Somos closed the first portion of the concert by featuring Peter’s dancing in an Argentenian Malambo. This piece featured his expert use of bolas which kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Peter had a fantastic connection with the audience with his casual humor along with the excitement of the bolas spinning. It provided a wonderful comedic component to an already thrilling show.

Following the intermission, the show continued with a wonderful combination of more flamenco song, dance, and guitar. The concert closed with their signature piece, Verde, where Melinda’s authentic flamenco cante together with the entire ensemble led to a standing ovation. The evening then concluded with an encore of a delightful arrangement of Santana’s Oye Como Va. The Dale Mabry SGA Guitar Series will start again in the Fall of 2013 featuring a brand new line-up of local and international guitarists.
