HCC Dental: Give kids a smile

Give Kids A Smile® is a national initiative by the American Dental Association to focus attention on the epidemic of oral disease among children. Over 1700 Give Kids A Smile® Events were scheduled through the American Dental Association network and nationwide over 400,000 children will be seen and treated by over 10,000 volunteer dentists and 31,000 other volunteers.

46 children received free dental treatment at the 2013 Give Kids a Smile® event held on February 1, 2013. The Hillsborough County Dental Association, Suncoast Community Health Centers at the Tom Lee Health Center in Dover, the Ronald McDonald Van and More Health, Inc. partnered to provide dental screenings and treatment to children, ages 2-17, and to educate families on good oral hygiene habits.

Hillsborough County Dental Association dentists and their staff, along with local hygienists, student dental hygienists and dental assistants from Hillsborough Community College, and the dental team from the Tom Lee Health Center volunteered to help make the event a success. Dental services provided included fillings, extractions, stainless steel crowns, cleanings, radiographs, sealants and fluoride treatments which totaled over $48,000.00.

Give Kids A Smile® is meant to accomplish two things – help children get the dental care they so desperately need and raise awareness that our children need better oral health to maintain their general health. Unfortunately, dental volunteer events will not wipe out untreated dental disease in America until parents and children are educated about prevention at an early age and children are able to receive regular preventative services, including fluoride and sealants.
