HCC HOPE Scholars
The HOPE Scholars held their 3rd Annual HOPE Scholar Reception at the Ybor City Campus on October 5, 2012. Helping Black/Brown Men with Opportunities in Programs that will advance their Education or "HOPE," is a targeted program designed to improve the retention, graduation, and four-year college transfer rate of African-American and Hispanic males. We are now entering the third year of the program.

Twenty-nine newly selected HOPE Scholars were honored and recognized individually by Dr. Ken Atwater, President of Hillsborough Community College. Our new inductees joined the 16 continuing HOPE Scholars for a total of 45 HOPE Scholars representing all five campuses. In attendance were Campus Presidents Dr. Shawn Robinson, Ybor City; Dr. Robert Chunn, Dale Mabry; Dr. Allen Witt, SouthShore; and Dr. Martyn Clay, Plant City. The major feature in the program was the special awards given to HOPE Scholars and Faculty Mentors. Outstanding Academic Achievement was given to Rafael Lugo who is graduating December 2012 and is accepted at the University of South Florida for Spring 2013. Two HOPE Scholar graduates were awarded All Around Scholar: Kevin Sloan (University of South Florida) and Timothy Arrington (Barry University). Outstanding Mentors went to Antoinette D’Oronzio and Myria Evans. Outstanding Staff Award went to Dr. Keith Berry, history faculty, for successfully implementing the two-year HOPE Scholar pilot program.

Over the past three years 72% of HOPE Scholars have been retained or have transferred to four-year institutions such as University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, University of North Florida, and Columbia University. This statistic exceeds the HCC baseline data on college retention, completion, and transfer rates of all HCC students as well as national data on the college success among minority males. The program is housed in the Equity and Diversity Office under the leadership of Dr. Joan Holmes, Special Assistant to the President for Equity & Special Programs, and coordinated by Barbara Cockfield, Program Manager, Equity & Special Programs.
