Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: Juan T. Vazquez Martin
One Waterway One Tampa Bay debuted at the Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor School of Visual and Performing Arts Gallery June 15-28, 2012. An Opening Reception was held Friday, June 15, 5-8pm. The gallery is located on the first floor of the Performing Arts Building, Palm Ave and 15th Street and is free and open to the public. There will also be a Closing Reception on Thursday, June 28 from 5-8pm.

The exhibition is a mosaic mural and art installation produced by the students, volunteers and staff of Community Stepping Stones to heighten awareness about how our daily lives connect and impact Tampa Bay’s estuaries and waterways. A dramatic installation of 1500 collected plastic bottles surrounds the mural.

Community Stepping Stones (CSS) is a nonprofit learning center in Sulphur Springs offering an integrated arts curriculum to inspire, educate, and prepare at-risk youth to become successful adults. CSS helps teens to learn core subjects such as science and mathematics by presenting challenges that require them to think critically, innovate and find practical solutions.

For the last six months, the Sulphur Springs teens have been applying their artistic skills to interpret the environmental field science they have been learning in a variety of estuary settings. They participated in several beach clean-ups during which they collected lots of plastic flotsam (floating trash). The teens sanitized the plastic and turned it into a colorful 12’x8’ mobile mosaic mural. This project was sponsored in part by a mini-grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. Students learned photographic documentation techniques through workshops offered by the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts on their estuary field trips. Photos and photo awards will be included in the exhibit.

The HCC Ybor gallery is open Monday and Wednesday through Friday 10am-4pm and Tuesdays noon-7pm. For further details please contact Gallery Director Carolyn Kossar, 813.253.7674, ckossar@hccfl.edu.
