HCC Hosts American Medical Student Association Meeting

HCC is pleased to form a relationship with the AMSA (American Medical Student Association).  AMSA is a student-governed, national organization commited to representing the concerns of all physicians-in-training and is pleased to establish a chapter at Hillsborough Community College this fall.  The group has set a goal of recruiting 50 members over the 2011-2012 academic year.  During the year the HCC chapter will fulfill a wide variety of goals including (1) establishing a resource center, (2) establishing a "Hands On Health" Program where members learn health related skills such as testing blood pressure, checking pulses, performing CPR, etc., (3) organizing blood and organ donor programs, (4) participating in community service projects, and (5) promoting relationships with Florida medical schools. The group also plans to send delegates to the National AMSA convention and implement a Physician Shadowing program in the spring of 2012. Contact Professor Elizabeth McCullough at mccollough@hccfl.edu for more information.

Admissions, Registration and Records

College Registrar Position - The Search Committee is in still in the process of narrowing the candidates for the College Registrar position.  The committee received 115 applications and has begun the interview process with the goal of narrowing the field to 4 final candidates in August.

Financial Aid

Student Services and Financial Aid Central Processing Services - Plans are underway for the Financial Aid and District ARR to move to the Ybor City Collaboration Studio this October. This Center will serve as an off-campus processing center for many of the operations performed on the campuses in Financial Aid.  These processes include student verification and processing loans, grants and other aid.  The current staff located at the District Office is expected to move to the Collaboration Studio the third week of October.

Veteran Student Services

Veteran Student Services Task Force - Given the Post 911 GI Bill and the subsequent increase in new Veterans enrolling in college, a taskforce of HCC staff and community partners has been developed to review ways to enhance our services for Veteran Students.  We expect the Taskforce will make their recommendations to the Cabinet this Fall.

New Initiatives

LIFE - Linking In Faith and Education Project - A recruitment team led by Sharlotte Henderson, and comprised of Dr. Keith Berry and Rashod Web will champion the LIFE program.  Linking In Faith and Education is a program involving recruitment of students in various Black Churches in the area.  The Kickoff breakfast is October 19 at the University Club where we will invite area ministers interested in working with us to attract their church members to continue their education at HCC.

Middleton High School Recruitment - In an effort to encourage the Middleton High School senior class to graduate and attend college, a small task force has developed a WRAP AROUND to meet this goal.  Barbara Cockfield and Tim Warren are leading the effort to work with all Middleton High School seniors to provide admissions and financial aid assistance to attend college.

Administrative and Legislative Updates
